Artifacts
Artifact 1: Attached below is a lesson that I created as part of a unit plan which served as a final project for one of my English classes. The lesson focuses on the epigraph of Richard Wright's Native Son and uses this passage to teach students about metaphor through video, reading, oral discussion, writing and drawing. This artifact meets this particular standard because it exemplifies my ability to differentiate instruction through a variety of activities and means of representation.
Native Son Lesson Plan
Artifact 2: Attached below is a lesson plan that I used to teach ballad during my student teaching experience. The lesson aimed to make a challenging poem (Samuel Coleridge's "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner") accessible to adolescent students. This artifact meets this particular standards because it demonstrates my ability to differentiate instruction and use a variety of strategies to make a challenging text accessible.

Reflections
Artifact 1:
This particular lesson is an example of differentiated instruction because it allows students to express their ideas about the text in a number of ways and also offers them a number of ways to access the content. The lesson succeeds in scaffolding the comprehension process and giving the students the information that they need to make informed analyses of the text. Most students will be unfamiliar with the Book of Job which is alluded to in the epigraph. However, by reading, writing, viewing a video summary, drawing and then discussing the students are given multiple ways to consider the story and how it relates to the novel. I selected this artifact because it is a sound example of the creativity in terms of instructional delivery. This indicator (5L) is an appropriate representation of this standard because it describes the effectiveness of this lesson. The variety of representation and presentation allows all students to access the content and gives them the tools that they need to think critically and creatively about the text.
This artifact meets this particular standard because it incorporates a wide variety of ways to deliver instruction. This variety not only makes the content accessible to a wide variety of students, but it also makes it interesting. This indicator (5C) is an appropriate representation of this standard because it describes my ability to differentiate instruction with the use of many different materials, technologies and resources. The video and drawing activity offer unique ways to deliver instruction while also making the textual analysis fun and engaging for students.
This artifact is an appropriate representation of the standard because it demonstrates my ability enhance the learning experience for all students. The scaffolding that takes place in this lesson allows students to clearly see how the concept of metaphor, the Book of Job and the epigraph all tie into the major themes studied in our reading of Native Son. Although a challenging and complex novel, this lesson and others like it give students a variety of ways to access the information, explore those ideas and then share those ideas with their classmates. This lesson enhances the learning experience for students regardless of their reading abilities or their interest in the text itself.
This artifact demonstrates my growth and development as a teacher because it exemplifies the ways in which I can make learning both fun and productive for all students. By incorporating so many different activities and learning strategies into the lesson, instruction can easily be modified by shifting focus based on which aspects of the lesson appear to be most engaging and worthwhile for the students.
Artifact 2:
This lesson plan was focused on the goal of introducing students to the poetic form of ballad. As one of the most well-known ballads, "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner" offered a perfect example of the ballad form but was much too advanced. In order to address this issue, I had students analyze lyrics from the heavy metal band Iron Maiden's adaptation of the poem. This accommodation succeeded in making the poem and the form accessible and interesting to adolescent students. I selected this artifact because it is a good example of my ability to deliver instruction in a way that is highly engaging for a wide range of students. This indicator (5L) is an appropriate representation of this standard because it explains my ability to use alternative explanations and promote critical and creative thinking in the classroom.
This artifact meets this particular standard because it demonstrates my ability and focus on creating a dynamic classroom environment through the planning and execution of my lessons. Using modern-day renditions of classical poetry and energetic video clips, I was able to make an otherwise dull topic exciting and relevant for my students. This indicator (5I) is an appropriate representation of this standard because it describes the range of teaching strategies that I incorporated into this lesson. Videos, written lyrics, worksheets and paintings all came together to give students a deep understanding of Coleridge's poem and the poetic form of ballad.
This artifact is an appropriate representation of the standard because it also shows my ability to modify instruction in order to enhance learning for all of my students. Because students work at very different speeds, the lesson offered a wide range of activities so that students were able to work at their own pace and move on as they were ready. In terms of instructional delivery, this aspect of the lesson helped to differentiate instruction and ensure that all students were involved and engaged for the entire class period.
This artifact demonstrates my growth and development as a teacher because it exemplifies my ability to make my content not only accessible for students but also engaging. While I find classical ballads interesting and fun, I am aware that middle schoolers do not agree. Throughout my student teaching experience, I have succeeded in finding ways to make literature and language skills relevant and exciting for my students.
